GOVERNMENT REGULATION

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Announces Revised I-9 Form
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services recently revised the I-9 Form and made it available on March 8, 2013.  The purpose of this form is to document verification of the identity and employment authorization of each new employee (both citizen and noncitizen) hired after November 6, 1986, to work in the United States.  Various improvements to the form have been made to help minimize errors including:

  • Adding data fields, including the employee’s foreign passport information ( if applicable), telephone number and email address
  • Improving the forms instructions
  • Revising the layout of the form, expanding it from one page to two pages (not including the form instructions and List of Acceptable Documents)

Prestige Employee Administrators, Inc. is helping clients stay informed about the new I-9 Form to ensure the most up-to-date forms are completed.

  • Prestige sent an email to all clients informing them of the new I-9 form and attached a copy of the I-9 form to the email.
  • All clients were informed to replace any existing I-9 forms with the new one for all new hires.
  • In addition, clients were informed that employers do not need to complete the new I-9 Form for employees that already have a properly completed form on file unless re-verification applies.
  • Prestige warned clients that failure to complete the I-9 form is a serious offense.

Prestige is keeping clients informed of the serious consequences that they can face by failing to complete the I-9 form.  Failure to complete the form can lead to major penalties from the Department of Homeland Security and fines can range from $110 for the first offense to 6 months in prison for a third offense.   Clients can rest easy knowing Prestige is staying on top of all the new tax laws and protecting their best interests.
